Dog sensibility listening
In order to introduce this topic is necessary to cast light about the modalities that govern the world of dog sensory perceptions.
When a “frame of mind” takes over, and usually the visual and the olfactory ones are the most overwhelming, the other ones remain very inhibited.
Thus, the dog will be deaf to our calls while chasing a prey or looking for some tasty bite.
To develop dog attention and sensibility of listening means to help him organize his network of senses in the most suitable way in order to live with humankind.
The total absorption the dog displays in his activities is a useful feature in a wild context, where from that determination depends his survival. In the social context, characterized by the interaction between a man and a dog, it will be rather a dangerous fault that is likely to harm the quality of his life and limit his freedom.
If for the purpose of his education we may occasionally find it advantageous to stimulate his instinct of predation or maintenance through playing with a ball or offering a biscuit, the benefits arising from the development of the sensibility of listening will yet be more valuable.
This achievement, which I consider one of the most important in the process of educating a dog, is also an indispensable mean by which to achieve that harmony in the relationship which is the true meaning and the true aim of the interaction between a man and a dog.
The desire for participation and sharing is the stimulus that allows a child to learn the mother language or a student to learn a foreign language. Man has many elements of social life in common with dog species, so based on this assumption, it is sufficient to just be careful to display a lively consistency between our behaviours and the language that accompanies them in order to ascertain the real possibility to share this language even with our dog.
Sometimes, the habit that dogs developed through observation will lead them to anticipate our requests or our intentions. Other times they will demonstrate to recognize verbal language and behave accordingly by adapting their behaviour to requests or terms particularly significant and recurrent in their life.
Dogs have a natural inclination to live and collaborate with man, an eventual neglect or failure of these attitudes, however rare, may be the result of disappointments, frustrated expectations; it will always be possible to restore the most favourable condition through a path of knowledge and education that takes into account the characteristics of each individual or the interaction between them.
